The Nanking Massacre Commonly known as "Rape of Nanking " is an infamous genocide, and often referred to as "The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II". It was a war crime committed by the Japanese Military in Nanjing (Nanking), then capital of the Republic of China after it fell to the Imperial Japanese army on December 13, 1937. The Violence lasted well into the next six weeks, until early February 1938.

The actual military invasion of Nanjing started during the tough battle in Shanghai, beginning in the summer of 1937.

After Shanghai's fall, a group of foreigners, lead by John Rabe, (a member of the the Nazi party) tried to save as many Chinese people as possible by creating a SAFETY ZONE on his estate. The population there ran from 200,000 to 250,000. The death toll would have probably been higher if this safe zone had not been created.

Japanese troops marched onward to Nanking (Nanjing), and only after 4 days of fighting, smashed into the city on December 13, 1937 with the orders given to them, which was to "kill the captives".

Within the hours of the Japanese attacking, the streets were filled with dead bodies, and blood ran all along the streets. The Japanese troops raped almost or as many as 80,000 Chinese women of all ages; from infants
to the elderly (women as old as 80 years old). Soldiers would go door to door searching for girls, and rape would often take place in public; in front of family members or other civilians.

• Many were gang raped.
  
• Forced into prostitution
• Son's were forced to rape their mothers, father's raped daughters..etc.
  
• Monks were forced to commit rape, as this was an amusement to the Japanese.
• Chinese men were forced to have sex with corpses.
• Any resistance or holding back from following these orders would proceed to execution.
• Women were killed right after being raped. Often through mutilation: Breasts being cut off, and/or stabbing of bamboo and any other objects into the vaginal area.
  

• Many records were not kept about many of the murders committed.
• Massacre of at least 260,000 civilians including the additional rape toll.
• This genocide is unknown to many outside Asia.

What happened to those responsible...?

• 28 of the 80 were tried by the International Military Tribunal.
