Victims

The victims of the Armenian Genocide were the Armenians living in Turkey from 1915 to 1916.

What Happened?

When World War I started the Ottoman Empire sided with the Central Powers. They planned to defeat Russia in the Battle of Sarikamis, but they were almost completely annihilated. This defeat was blamed on the Armenians because instead of being loyal to the Ottoman Empire they sided with the Russians, and so the deportation and execution of the Armenians began.

How did it end?

The Armenian Genocide ended when the Armenians were given amnesty and the Deputy Minister of the Interior, Ismail Janbolat, is put in charge of the return of the remaining Armenian deportees.

What happened to those responsible?

After Being Defeated in World War 1 the Ottoman Empire was abolished. Enver Pasha was tried in absentia and was sentenced to death, but he fled to Berlin and later died by a wound that he received when leading a cavalry charge.

What happened to those who were attacked?

The number as to how many Armenians were killed and deported during that period of time is very contreversial. The numbers range from 600,000 to as many as 1,500,000. The Armenian population survived the tragic events but it was nothing but a mere fraction of what it used to be.

Is it a "recognized" genocide?

Yes, it is a recognized genocide by twenty one countries, although the Republic of Turkey does not accept the term "genocide" as the correct term to describe what happened during that period of time.
